“Did You Hear About the New TikTok Trend?”

Social media these days take up such a major portion of our lives that people would pull up their social media pages in order to continue an ongoing conversation. This can go in two ways. One is where the conversation continues after they show the page that connected with the conversation. The other is where the person fails to load a certain page cutting the conversation mid-sentence. This either leads to an awkward silence or an hour spent by both parties of the conversation being on their phone. Social media and phone has been overused in the current society which restrains people’s conversational skills without having the topic of something they saw on TikTok that day.

Tiktok is a platform of social media that is quite prevalent in the current society because it is entertaining or relatable content that people can enjoy with a short span of attention. It is one of the easiest ways to spend time and also being available to all. I have to admit that I use it frequently unintentionally and waste quite a bit of time on the app at least a couple of times a week.

People are so reliant on their phone nowadays that when the phone is gone for a few minutes, they will start searching and asking everyone for their phone. Even just about a few years ago, it feels like conversations were simpler and easier. Hours would pass by at sleepovers where we would forget about our phones being so invested in what each other has to say.

Nowadays, the first thing that people would question would be “Did you hear about the new TikTok trend?”. It would be an odd conversation without a single mention of an aspect of social media. I like to tell others that I am pretty talkative and think that I know how to have conversations with others. However, I am pretty sure that my conversational skills have dropped a bit ever since people were so reliant on their phones and used social media to have conversations with one another. I just miss the times when people were capable of having entertaining conversations for hours about the most random subjects and topics. Talking about “life” is now such a rare instance that I wish can come back into our daily conversations.
